Scale

Noticed a scale for weighing things
on someone's desk a short while ago.

He had no reason to weigh things.
It was just there on his desk.

So I imagined...

He had a compulsion to know the weight of things.
He would look at something, perhaps a stapler or
a book and he would wonder what its weight was.
It went beyond just curiosity, it became an obsession.
He could not rest until he knew the weight of the object
to the nearest ounce. He would be on edge all day otherwise.

So he bought this scale just in case this happened.
Then he could get some peace until the next "episode."
You'd sometimes see him carrying something that he
hid, like an alcoholic hides his bottle in a paper bag, to
be weighed at his little scale. So far the objects have
been small things like a book, a calculator, a coffee cup
or a shoe. So far...
